Protected and unprotected text on the same line

Is it possible to have both Protected and unprotected text

on the same line.  For example in a document that uses outlined headings:

1.0.  Introduction

   1.1. Scope

       1.1.1  Heading 3

I would like the user to be able to edit the caption of the Heading

(Introduction, Scope, Heading 3)

but not the autogenerated numbers (1.0, 1.1, 1.11)?

Any suggestions?
