One extra thought -- maybe I can handle it like this:

1. Use the tag to store the footnote number for each footnote.

2. When I iterate through my list of items, change the tag values,

without worrying about the text (yet).

3. Go through the items in the document (not my list), and when I find a

footnote-style item, check that its text matches the number in its tag.

If not, change the text to match the tag.

Does this make sense?
