Having finally got the live spell check working, the only problem is that it is a bit slow. On right clicking on an underlined misspelt word, there is a noticable delay before the popup menu appears. Is there any solution to this?

Once the word is marked as misspelling, retrieving misspelled word at the caret position is lightening fast.
However, generating a list of suggestions for menu may be slow, it depends on spell checker, not on trichview.
